![]() ![]() SMW is a great game to just pick up and play, which is why I replay it often why my first full playthrough of YI in more than a decade was on the SNES Mini, and boy did I just abuse the rewind function. Yet YI is definitely missing the immediacy of SMW. ![]() You have to pay attention and git seriously good as the game progresses, especially for the extra levels. The true goal of the game is the collectathon, so everything is there to this purpose and it’s goddamn incredible with all the red herrings, the one-shot red coins, the hidden keys, the hidden clouds. Yeah, Baby Mario’s crying is annoying but that’s the point, innit? Yoshi’s gibberish in the GBA port, now that’s offensive. The artstyle looked out of this world on a CRT, the music is simple but perfect (if you ever doubt Koji Kondo can do rock, just listen to the boss themes in YI) and the sound design is just flawless. Objectively, Yoshi’s Island is ridiculously good and possibly the pinnacle of 2D platforming.
